Laptop, Sony's EV-DO-packin' VAIO VGN-TXN15P

Sony is bringing the long lasting, EV-DO-packin' goodness to us yet again in the revamped version of its VGN-TXN10. The folks at Laptop Mag got their lucky paws on Sony's latest 3G ultraportable, and were more than pleased with the results. Housing a 1.2GHz Intel Core Solo processor, 1GB of RAM, 80GB 4200RPM hard drive, dual-layer DVD burner, Intel's GMA950 integrated graphics set, and an 11.1-inch 1,366 x 768 resolution LCD, reviewers were thrilled with the decent performance and exceptionally long "8 hours, 32 minutes" of battery life they realized in testing. Both the design and long list of ammenties were greatly appreciaited, but the wee keyboard and (unsurprisingly) high pricetag were complained about. The "star attraction," as it was so aptly called, delivered a very impressive "average throughput of 768Kbps," with peaks as "high as 1Mbps." They did note that upload speeds were a tad slow, but they hope that Sprint's continued rollout of Rev A technology will help the issue resolve itself. Overall, it came "pretty close to being the ultimate ultraportable," and should suit just about anyone with deep enough pockets quite well.

If the OQO model 02 is too small for your needs, step up to the Sony VAIO VGN-TXN15P. About the size and weight (10.7 x 7.7 x 1.2 inches and 2.8 pounds) of a small hardcover book, the VGN-TXN15P is easy to slip into a bag or backpack yet still manages to deliver a wealth of features.

As with any ultraportable, easy portability has its consequences. The keyboard is a bit cramped (though we appreciate the large Enter, Shift, and Backspace keys). While the 11.1-inch widescreen is better than a ten-inch screen typical of this weight class, it is still on the small side. The 1366 x 768-pixel resolution doesn't help readability, as text and icons wind up pretty small. And you have to be square-on to see the panel; moving even slightly off-axis in any direction results in a drop-off in brightness.

We're happy to see a DVD burner included in a machine this small, and the 80GB hard drive is good for this class. Sony didn't skimp on ports, either, including all the typical connectors plus a memory card reader (Memory Stick and SD).

Application performance (165 on MobileMark 2005) from the 1.2-GHz Intel Core Solo processor was on the low side compared with full-sized notebooks, but it's fine for a machine this small. As predicted, with a showing of 858 on 3DMark03, don't expect to play 3D games.

We have no complaints when it comes to the VGN-TXN15P's EV-DO Rev. A WWAN connectivity (via Sprint's network). During our tests, wireless broadband speed was very good. The VAIO's average download speed of 725 Kbps was second only to the Toshiba Portege R400-34931, and its upload speed average of 128.6 was second to the Panasonic Toughbook CF-W5.

Surfing via WWAN on the VGN-TXN15P was a joy. CNN.com loaded in less than 15 seconds; we were checking our Gmail Inbox 7 seconds after typing in our password; and video playback was quick and stutter-free. And the VGN-TXN15P's battery life-more than eight hours-means you can go wire-free all day.

The VGN-TXN15P comes with plenty of software. Sony includes its VAIO Support Central utility, backup and restore utilities, and the VAIO Hardware Diagnostics suite to test the CPU, memory, hard drive, and more. You also get Microsoft Works Suite 8.5 and Sony's digital-video and DVD creation apps.

The Sony VAIO VGN-TXN15P delivers a lot of bang for the buck. If you don't mind the cramped keyboard and screen, it's an excellent way to stay connected at high speeds without having to be near an outlet

Laptop, Sony’s TT notebook - the world’s lightest Blu-ray Disc Notebook

Computer and gadget makers always find ways to title their product with world’s thinnest or world’s lightest. Sony has just unveiled new notebooks in their VAIO® TT Series, which is so-called the world’s lightest notebook with Blu-ray disc support.

The new Sony VAIO TT notebook shouldn’t be the world’s lightest notebook as it weighs 2.87 pounds or 1.3 KG, but it’s the lightest notebook that is built with Blu-ray disc technology. This notebook is also ultrathin which has a thinness of less than 1 inch. Some models are capable of playing Blu-ray disc movies in full HD 1080p resolution when connected to a compatible HDTV. The units are not only restricted to playback, they can also record, store and play back personal content on high-capacity BD media.

The new Sony notebook features a screen that measures 11.1 inch diagonally, backed by Sony’s XBRITE-DuraView™ LCD technology, to deliver 100 percent of color saturation for true-life high quality pictures. And the technology also helps in producing energy-effecient white LED backlight that gives you viewing of photos in crystal-clear resolution.

With such a great display, it makes it the best for viewing HD Blu-ray content on this notebook. And furthermore, the screen’s extra wide dimensions fit exactly the usual aspect ratio of 16:9 that HD movies are shot at, which you don’t get those annoying black bars seen on narrow screen.

The TT model notebook is also equipped with HDMI output connector which allows you to hook it up to bigger screen, such as an HD TV, for viewing the HD contents.

Laptop, new Sony VAIO NR laptop

It appears that the new Sony VAIO NR laptops will be arriving soon. Headed for Europe first, the VAIO NR will come in two colors. The lower spec machine (VAIO VGN-NR11SS) comes in a silver finish with Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 Processor (1.5GHz, 2MB Cache, 667MHz FSB), while the higher spec machine (VAIO NR11Z/T) comes in a darker charcoal grey/black finish with Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 Processor (2GHz, 2MB Cache, 800MHz FSB). Both notebooks adopt the standard Intel X3100 graphics, and a 200GB hard drives, along with the usual ExpressCard and memory card slots. NotebookReview speculates that these Sony’s new NR series will be released this fall for at least $899 for the base configuration.

Sony has recently updated the Sony VAIO Type F with a Blu-Ray drive. The VAIO FZ71 laptop comes jam packed with a 15.4 inch LCD screen, GeForce 8400M GT, Wifi A/B/G/N, 200GB HDD, 1 to 4GB RAM, Core 2 Duo T7250 at 2GHz (BTO up to 2.8GHz), webcam and HDMI. No word on pricing so far.

Sony have just introduced their brand new business minded laptop called the Sony VAIO BX51 which is another update to their BX Series, if you want to go onto the Santa Rosa territory then this will be the one for you. The new Sony VAIO BX51 laptop pictured above will boast a 15.4 inch 1280 x 800 X-black display which looks great.

The BX51 laptop will also feature a much better 2GHz T7250 Core 2 Duo processor which also has 2GB of RAM and a 120GB hard drive (VGN-BX51XP model) , you can choose between Windows Vista Business or Windows XP Professional your choice and the model name for the XP is VGN-BX51XP and the Vista model is called VGN-BX51VN.

It will have built-in Bluetooth, 1.3 megapixel “Motion Eye” webcam, the VGN-BX51VN model will have a 160GB hard drive. Both these models should hit Europe at the end of the month with prices of $1600 to $1880 (€1,120 or €1,350) approx.

Over the last few weeks a few of our users have been looking for details on the brand new Sony VAIO TZ 11 laptop, so we thought it’s about time we gave you some information on it.

The Sony VAIO TZ has two models which are the VAIO TZ11XN/B and VAIO TZ11MN/N with just a couple of differences between them, which model you choose may depend on if you like black laptops or silver laptops.

If it’s not the style or color that bothers you, but rather the features and your looking for the one with the best performance then the VAIO VGN-TZ11XN/B is your Sony VAIO TZ as it has more RAM (2GB compared to 1GB on the other model), more hard drive space (100GB compared to 80GB).

Of course more specs means more money so also your budget may affect your buying decision as well, although we have no word on the prices yet.

Laptop, Sony VAIO Laptop

Sony VAIO VGN-TZ298N/XC is the next release of Sony Electronics.
It is a new laptop model based on the previous VAIO TZ ultraportable laptops configurations and design but with some important improvements such as a 64GB SSD and the 250GB HDD, replacing the existent 48GB SSDs and 100GB HDDs combinations.

The 11-inch notebooks come with an external DVD burner and a beautiful, redesigned, Bordeaux Red premium carbon fiber casing, while the 1366 x 768 pixels displays will feature the LED backlight technology.

They will be powered by the Intel Core 2 Duo Ultra Low Voltage processors such as the U7600 running at 1.2GHz, Intel GM945 chipset with the integrated Graphics Media Accelerator 950, and will have 2GB of RAM memory.

For connectivity the model supports Gigabit Ethernet, USB, VGA out, Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n, 56K modem connection, and Sprint Mobile Broadband.
There will be also a fingerprint reader, the ExpressCard support and Firewire, while for for video conferences it will bring a built-in web camera with.

VAIO VGN-TZ298N/XC weights approximately 2.6 pounds, is 1-inch thin and operates up to 9 hours with a standard battery and up to 13 hours with the large capacity battery version.
After the official release we’ll find out more about the price, which will probably be between $2,500 and $3,000.

According to NotebookReview, Sony will release 15.4-inch, 13.3-inch and 11.1-inch widescreen VAIO FZ, VAIO SZ5 and VAIO TZ series in July this year. The widescreen 14-inch VAIO CR laptop and 13.3-inch widescreen VAIO CZ are also rumored to come out at the same time. The VAIO FZ series will feature Intel’s next generation “Santa Rosa” platform and the new Core 2 Duo “Merom” processors, a 2GB of RAM, and up to 200GB hard drive. Sony VAIO SZ5 series will feature current Core 2 Duos, 2GB of RAM and up to 200GB HDD, while the ultra-portable Sony VAIO TZ laptops will be powered by Core 2 Duo ultra-low voltage CPUs. The new Sony Clie UX-50 looks like a laptop, and is priced accordingly. Walter Mossber from The Wall Street Journal reviewed this new Palm OS based device.

"Anyone who thinks the long slump in the technology business has halted innovation isn't paying attention to the hand-held computer market. Despite weak sales, the makers of personal digital assistants, or PDAs, are continuing to introduce bold new designs, with a focus on wireless capabilities.

Garmin has come out with a Palm-compatible PDA, the iQue, with a built-in satellite receiver for mapping and navigation. Research in Motion has announced a color model of its BlackBerry wireless e-mail device, the 7230, with a built-in phone.

Now Sony has weighed in with a wireless PDA that looks like a tiny laptop and has almost as many functions. It's the new Clie UX50, and I've been testing it for a couple of weeks.

With the new UX50, all that has changed. It still has a built-in camera and a gorgeous high-res screen, and it still handles multimedia functions such as music, photos and videos with ease. But this model includes built-in, high-speed Wi-Fi wireless networking for e-mail and Web browsing. It also has Bluetooth wireless connectivity for linking up to a wireless phone when it's not near a Wi-Fi transmitter.

The most radical difference between the UX50 and most other PDAs is the overall design. Instead of adopting the traditional vertical format, the new Clie is aligned horizontally, like a laptop."

Sony, leader in electronic products, has introduced the new Sony Vaio CR notebook. The chic design and vibrant colors such as sangria, cosmopolitan, dove, indigo and black (matte finish) light-weight laptop appears to target the youth who are interested in looks and compactness rather than high-end performance.

At 5.5 pounds the CR notebooks delivers a standard battery, a specialized keyboard font, an LED that pulsates beneath the notebook’s trim to indicate what is happening — booting up, powering down, hibernating — and glowing and fading accordingly.

According to Mike Abary, senior vice president of VAIO product marketing for Sony Electronics in the United States, “Just like the car you drive, notebooks today are an extension of your personality. As such, users expect their PC to reflect their creativity and individuality, as well as handle their spreadsheets.”

Sony Drive XEL-1 OLED TV.

There are two things that captivate you when you see the new Sony Drive XEL-1 OLED TV. One, that it has a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and two, that it is just 3-mm thin. The 11-inch TV features a 960 x 540 pixel resolution, terrestrial digital tuner, 2x 1W speaker, HDMI, USB, and Ethernet jacks. It measures 287 x 140 x 253-mm and weighs 2kg (3.3-pounds).
Sony Drive XEL-1 OLED TV will be coming to Japan on December 1st for ¥200,000 or about $1,740.

Sony now has five slimmer Bravia HDTVs to sell to its consumers. The quintet of televisions range from 20% slimmer than last year’s Bravia models (50-inch KDS-50A3000, the 55-inch KDS-55A3000 and the 60-inch KDS-60A3000 all fall within that spectrum) to 40% (the jumbo-sized 60-inch KDS-Z60XBR5 and 70-inch KDS-Z70XBR5 are here.)

Updates to the technology include a greater color display range of 1.8 times the previous models capabilities and four modes of Motionflow 120Hz high frame rate technology that you can change to fit the picture that you’re watching. Theater Mode will adjust the set to deliver an experience more like the one you get going to the cinema while PhotoTV HD mode tweaks the color, sharpness and gradient so that your viewing of digital photos will be crystal clear and ultra-sharp. All five of the screens can support 1080p input capability via HDMI, component, and PC inputs (with supporting PC graphics cards) for an outstanding picture.

All of the five new Bravias will also have Sony’s Digital Media Extender which allows you to stream digital content in a snap from the internet from sites like AOL, Yahoo! and Grouper, as well as Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony BMG Music. The KDS-50A3000, KDS-55A3000 and KDS-60A3000 Bravias will ship to stores in August and retail around $3,000, $3,300 and $3,500 respectively. The new KDS-Z60XBR5 and KDS-Z70XBR5 will arrive this fall and retail for about $5,000 and $6,000.

Sony new XEL-1 OLED TV

Sony had their new XEL-1 OLED TV on display recently at CEATEC, a Japanese consumer electronics show. Now I'm not one to jump to conclusions or anything, but based on the photographic evidence, I'm tempted to say this thing is thin. It boasts a 3mm depth, 1 million:1 contrast ratio, and costs $1,700 (!!) for an 11-incher. Now I know what you're thinking. Here comes a 3mm wide, 11 inch long dong joke. Well I have news for you folks. I'm too mature for that. So instead I'm just going to say that while thin may be in, fat is where it's at. CRTs forever

new Sony Bravia

It's their first TV to boast their new x.v. color technology that gives superior image quality by combining 1080p resolution with their "Motionflow" 120Hz technology with motion compensation. What all that jargon basically means is that even with the TV's gigantic size, you won't get any of those blurry images during fast-motion scenes.

But don't run out with your credit card just yet! With its hefty $33,000 price tag, you may want to look at selling off some real-estate first.

new XWL-1 TV from Sony

The new XWL-1 TV from Sony is quite an amazing little screen. It has an Organic EL display technology which allows the screen to be just 3mm thin. Quite amazing if you ask me. The screen also measures 11 inches QHD (960×540) and has a good contrast ratio of 1000k:1 with vivid colours. The TV actually has support for HD and has a HDMI input port. Being only 3 mm thin the TV actually sits on a small stand where it appears all the cables and PSU are fitted. This TV will sell for $1734 when it is released in Japan in December. No details of release dates elsewhere are around yet though.

Sony Vaio LS1 TV / PC

Sony’s latest attempt to combine a flat panel LCD with a PC has resulted in the svelte new VAIO LS1 TV/PC. The new system combines a reasonably powerful computer into the back of a flat-panel 19-inch WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050) LCD display.







The computer features an Intel Core Duo processor, 2GB of RAM and a 250GB Hard Drive. The system also does its best to hide any cables and integrates built in cable management and comes with a wireless mouse and keyboard. In addition, the system has built-in 802.11g Wi-Fi network access.

The LS1 ships with Windows XP MCE 2005 (upgradeable to Vista when it comes out), a built-in NTSC TV tuner and DVR capabilities, but doesn’t include any HD tuning capability - which is a shame given the resolution of the screen.

The system has a (pricey) MSRP of $2100, and should hit Sony stores this September.
